India is in a phase of demographic transition and the geriatric population is burgeoning. Care of the elderly in need of medical attention is often fragmented among multiple doctors, as these patients have multiple co morbidities and psychosocial issues. Therefore, there is an urgent need to produce physicians who understand the unique health problems of the elderly, and who possess clinical competencies to deal with them. Geriatrics is the only “speciality” which knits these myriad physical, psychosocial, financial and emotional problems together into a tapestry which still remains beautiful. With inputs from Allied Health and nursing, the doctor is able to help the elderly in the autumn of their lives.
There are very few centres offering a MCI recognised MD in Geriatrics training program in India. With this one year hybrid/blended fellowship in Geriatrics, we can help to increase the pool of trained manpower in the country so as to deliver cost effective, expert care to the senior citizens of the country. We aim to train doctors from primary and secondary hospitals to make an impact on the health care of the elderly in their area. The competencies they gain with this curriculum will enable them to deliver effective preventive, curative, rehabilitative, promotive and palliative care to the ageing population.
This one year blended Learning Program uses many teaching learning techniques to make adult learning both stimulating and interesting – contact classes include interactive lectures, clinics, developing skills and assessments. Assessments are also ongoing and formative in nature with case vignettes, discussion board and self learning modules. All this would enable the doctor at the periphery to recognize geriatric syndromes early and deal with them as much as possible at the grass root level. The course also has a strong component of ethics, values and social responsibility. We initially plan to take aspirants from the numerous mission hospitals in India, in order to strengthen ties with these hospitals and to build bridges, so that the older person is treated appropriately.
